Unbought is a pretend shopping site. You browse real products, "check out", and instead of paying a store you move that money into your own savings. Nothing is ever purchased here and no payment is ever taken, so there is no card, bank or payment information to collect.
Your cart, orders and savings log are kept only in your own browser's local storage. They are not sent to us and we cannot see them. Clearing your browser data, or using the "Clear all data on this device" button on the Savings tab, erases them permanently.
The product activity described below is still recorded, because it doesn't need an account.
Signing in is optional. Google sends us an identity token, from which we store:
We do not receive or store your Google password, and we ask Google for nothing beyond this basic profile information. We have no access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts, or anything else in your Google account.
Once signed in, your cart, orders and savings log are also stored on our server so they can sync between your devices. That is the whole purpose of the account — there is no other use for it.
To see what people are searching for and talking themselves out of buying, we record three things: the words you type into the search box, the products you add to your cart, and the products you "check out". Each record holds the product name, shop and price, and the time it happened.
These records are tied to a random identifier your browser generates for itself the first time you use the site — not to your name, email, IP address or Google account. This happens whether or not you're signed in, and signing in does not connect the two: we deliberately never write your account id onto this activity.
We should be straight with you about what that does and doesn't mean. Because the identifier is stable until you clear it, activity from the same browser can be grouped together over time. That makes it pseudonymous rather than truly anonymous, even though it holds nothing that names you. We use it only to understand product trends in aggregate, and we don't try to work out who anyone is.
Clearing it is one click: "Clear all data on this device" on the Savings tab deletes everything recorded under that identifier from our database, and your browser starts again with a fresh one.
We set exactly one cookie, and only after you sign in. It holds a signed session token so the site knows you're logged in. It cannot be read by JavaScript, and it expires after 30 days. Signing out deletes it.
We do not use advertising, analytics or tracking cookies, and we do not track you across other websites.
We do not sell, rent or share your personal information with anyone else, and we don't use it for advertising.
No card numbers, bank details or payment credentials — the site takes no payments and processes no transactions. When you "check out", no money moves anywhere. Transferring money into your real savings account is something you do yourself, in your own bank, and we never see those accounts.
The "Clear all data on this device" button on the Savings tab does three things: erases your cart, orders and savings log from this browser; clears the synced copy on our server if you're signed in; and deletes the product activity recorded under this browser's random identifier. It is the most complete way to remove what we hold, and it needs no account and no email to us.
To have your account record itself removed as well, contact us at the address below and we'll delete it.
This site isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
